The Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) strives to make each artwork relevant to the building and surrounding neighborhood. Community members, building staff (for example: firemen or librarians) and the architect are often asked to serve on a project subcommittee when a project will be sited at a newly constructed county facility.
With the subcommittee advice, the PAAC determines a theme or purpose for the artwork, chooses a selection method, selects an artist, approves the artwork, and brings it to the Martin County Board of County Commissioners for final approval. The entire process can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months.
Funding for public art comes from 1% of the construction cost of a new or remodeled county facility (not constructed with bond proceeds), a new active regional park greater than 50 acres, parking facilities and ad valorem.
